St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 134 E. Bishop ST, Bellefonte, PA 16823-1975 US - Respect for the Eucharist

Respect for the Eucharist
Date: 6/1/2000

Proper respect for the Eucharist involves AWARENESS or ATTENTION. We should remember that when we are in church, the most important Person present is Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, normally contained in the tabernacle. Proper reverence includes a genuflection (touching the right knee to the floor) in the general direction of the front of the church, and reverential quiet (this does not mean absolute silence; but a respectful attitude of quiet both out of courtesy to other people who may be praying, and for the general treating of the House of Prayer as something other than a worldly building). Awareness and Attention is also required when receiving the Blessed Sacrament. This adds to piety and devotion. The second element is KNOWING WHAT TO DO. When receiving communion, decide whether you are receiving on the tongue or in the hand. All Communicants answer the announcement “The Body of Christ” with “Amen.” Receiving on the tongue, the person slightly tilts the head back, extends their tongue beyond their lower lip. If receiving in the hand, have your left palm upraised and supported by your right hand, about chest high, when you arrive at the head of the communion line [left handed people do just the opposite]. Communicants receiving in the hand, take one step aside and deposit the host in their mouth [no one should go walking with the Blessed Sacrament]. Special attention should be taken with receiving the Precious Blood, to avoid any danger of spilling. All communicants answer the announcement “The Blood of Christ” with “Amen”; then taking the chalice in both hands proceed to take a sip. Being sure to place the chalice securely back in the hands of the minister, before you turn to go to your seat.
